Charles Leclerc revealed on the way for his Formula 1 victory that was overdue – that the strength of character and mental strength that is an essential portion of the make-up of a grand prix driver – on Sunday.
Even the 21-year-old took a triumph – in the Grand Prix under pressure from Lewis Hamilton – that should have come before the backdrop of the death and raced against for much of his life.
Among his opponents was Anthoine Hubert, who was killed in a collision of dreadful violence in Saturday’s Formula 2 race at the circuit After Leclerc took part in his first motor race.
Leclerc said – of themself, Toro Rosso motorist Pierre Gasly and Mercedes book Esteban Ocon -“we have been four kids dreaming of F1 and now we have grown up together. He was a very big shock for me and everybody else in motorsport and an extremely sad day”.
It even took the shine off what should have been one of the happiest days of Leclerc’s lifespan. To say the very least.
“It is very difficult to enjoy this very first win with the scenario we had yesterday. It means a fantasy come true. I have been looking up dreaming about being first a Formula 1 driver, which happened last season and driving for Ferrari this year and the win.
“This is a good day however on the other hand shedding Anthoine yesterday brings me back to 2005, my first French (karting) championship has been him. It is quite difficult to enjoy it fully today but hopefully in a few weeks I will realise exactly what happened today.”
Dealing with these kinds of events is part of the work description for a driver, as explained in my article on Saturday. But that doesn’t mean it is insignificant or simple.
It isn’t the first time he has suffered a loss of someone close to him in his profession. As is well reported, he was the godson of the former driver Jules Bianchi, who suffered head injuries in an accident almost five decades ago.
Leclerc has described many times how the death of Bianchi – that, at just eight years older than himwas more like a big brother, and who had been instrumental in directing him through his formative years in the game – only made him more determined to succeed.
But it’s 1 thing to state that, and quite another to go out and perform it, and risk your life at the identical action that murdered someone so close.
Following the race, on Sunday, Hamilton Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas provided some insight into how they do this.

Leclerc would not have picked such circumstances for his first triumph, and he would probably have achieved with a simpler race, for that was won, against the toughest competition there is.
Ferrari had dominated qualifying, their prodigious straight-line speed making up to their weakness in contrast to Mercedes from the corners of Spa sector.
But their wear was always possible to make things hard from the race, and, as anticipated, Hamilton mounted an assault on the cars which really nearly came off.
Hamilton turned up the pressure on the German, that struggled with his speed and his tyres Since Leclerc assembled a tiny head at the first 10 laps over team-mate Sebastian Vettel.
Ferrari was compelled by hamilton’s proximity into pitting Vettel they might have wanted, and from this moment his race was given Ferrari administration.

Had Vettel never held Hamilton back for as long as he had Mercedes matched Hamilton a lap before, on precisely exactly the same lap like Leclerc, or did, the world champion might have won the racegiven it was ended by him on Leclerc’s tail. However, the Monegasque did enough.

Traditionally, a primary win is the moment that an F1 driver actually admits themselves as a real rival in F1. For Leclerc it’s different. That came.
It’s been evident that this is a man who was likely to be a significant part of F1 over the next ten years. His debut year for Sauber last year was exceptional, and though he’s left a few errors, and his skill is still raw in some specific aspects, his moment in Ferrari’s strain has been no less .
Many suspected so it’s proved and he would provide a significant run for his money this year to Vettel.
Leclerc has out-qualified the champion for the previous six races in a row. On the season so farhe is quicker than Vettel more than a lap on common by 0.13secs. He’s three pole positions to the one of Vettel, and he has become the first Ferrari driver to win a race.
Ironically, Vettel should have won Canada, but for his error and following controversial punishment, but had his time gone differently that this could have been Leclerc’s third or maybe fourth victory.
He is slowly but surely establishing himself as Ferrari driver, a scenario that’s extremely embarrassing for Vettel. And Vettel currently faces a job that is very serious sustaining his standing.
The admiration between Hamilton and Leclerc has been clear Since the year has progressed. Leclerc equaling Hamilton for his ability and his success. And Hamilton, who has treated the younger guy hasn’t bothered to hide his regard for the potential and talent of Leclerc.
“His results speak for themselves, really,” Hamilton explained. “It is not easy for any driver to leap right into a top group, let alone Ferrari, contrary to a four-time world champion, God knows just a little more expertise. Then to continuously from race one, out-perform, out-qualify and out-drive a four-time world champion isn’t simple to do.
“He has been really unfortunate in many races this year. Can have become the biggest win now. So, there’s a lot more shame to come from him and I’m looking forward to seeing his development and racing together with him. It was fun today. He was only a tiny bit too quick.”
