(CNN) — Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has resigned from the NFL’s social justice committee after he was criticized for hosting a fundraiser for President Donald Trump.
Ross told the NFL and committee members last week that he was stepping down to concentrate on his nonprofit, Ross Initiative at Sports for Equality (RISE), that empowers the sports community to tackle racial discrimination and social justice, Dolphins spokesman Jason Jenkins said in a statement to CNN Sports on Wednesday.
“He believes in and is still completely committed to this work that’s been achieved by the team and will stay a passionate supporter and tireless advocate for social justice causes, the fight for equal rights and instruction,” the announcement said.
Even the NFL’s social justice strategy, which is composed of players and owners, focuses on supporting efforts that”reduce barriers to opportunity, with a priority to supporting improvements in schooling and economic growth, community and police relations, and also the criminal justice system”
A part of the Players Coalition, chris Long, a social justice and racial equality nonprofit, told Sports Illustrated the organization got Ross to consent to get removed from the committee.
“He held a fundraiser for a man who predicted protesting players’sons of bitches’ + campaigned for them to shed jobs. The working class is directly involved. You can see that. I admire the work w of SR . Don’t get it? Can not help,” Long, a two-time Super Bowl champion wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
Ross is one of the most successful property developers in the nation. He is the vast majority owner of Related Companies, a property development firm that bought Equinox in 2005, once the gym was valued at $505 million.
Equinox owns the budget gym series Blink Fitness and cycling studio SoulCycle.
Until The Washington Post first reported he’d host the design for the President in the Hamptons Ross’d kept a relatively low profile.
Dolphins recipient Kenny Stills and many others criticized for hosting the design Ross. “You can’t have a nonprofit with this assignment statement open your doors to Trump,” Stills wrote on Twitter.
The recipient stated that Ross and he talked about the fundraiser issue and both agreed to disagree. Stills said he received death threats over his position.
Clients also called for SoulCycle, in Addition to boycotts of Equinox and Blink Fitness
“Sorry @soulcycle… you can’t peddle’inspiration’ on your courses and also have an owner financing hate and racism in the rear room,” celebrity Conrad Ricamora wrote. “Byyyeeeeeeeeeee.”
In an open letter to members concerning the backlash, Equinox’s Executive Chairman Harvey Spevak apologized to the”impact it’s had on our community”
“Mr. Ross is not the majority investor at Equinox,” composed Spevak, who joined the company in 1999. “He is one of the investors such as myself. He does not run the organization. I do.”
Though Equinox does not conduct, he has been now devoting it and will receive funds from his investment.
In a statement to CNN about the fundraiser, Ross said:”I’ve been an active man in the democratic process.”
“I’ve known Donald Trump for 40 years, and while we agree on some problems , we strongly disagree on a lot of others and I have not been shy about expressing my opinions. … I’ve been, and will continue to become, an outspoken champion of civic equality, diversity, inclusion, public education and ecological sustainability, and that I have and will continue to encourage leaders on either side of the aisle to tackle these challenges,” the statement said.
