West Bromwich Albion remained high in the Championship table after a late Hal Robson-Kanu winner in Middlesbrough.
Middlesbrough had the choice of the possibilities at an abysmal first half of George Saville watching his effort.
However, Robson-Kanu was to set the league leaders in the front, tapping the ball in.
And the Baggies held on to move two points clear from Leeds.
West Brom had gone into the break near the top of the Championship after a performance to conquer Cardiff 4-2 at The Hawthorns.
Nevertheless, they were disjointed with Middlesbrough opening the scoring at the end of a first half , as Sam Johnstone saved the rally of Saville rid off the ground in the Riverside.
At the end, Matheus Pereira attempted a spectacular but Darren Randolph was equal to it before Johnstone parried a campaign from Jonny Howson as either side enhanced at the onset of the second half.
Boro had a chance however, Saville smashed the ball.
Plus it was West Brom that the left with all three points thanks to Robson-Kanu, while Boro dropped to 21st.
Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate told BBC Tees:
We created numerous chances, which we need to choose. Thats what it is all about, creating chances and placing the ball in the back of the internet and we didnt do this
They dominated possession but we went toe to toe with a team thatll likely go up – theyve got some great players but that I thought we played extremely well. If we create chances like that and perform like this, well be fine.
I can not recall a real save that Darren Randolph needed to create in the game. I thought we needed to win the match, we ran them all the way and that was a functionality miles better than the execution against Birmingham.
West Brom boss Slaven Bilic said:
It is pressure up there. It is a good pressure. The more you win that adds to the pressure and the closer youll be to the tables top.
Middlesbrough arent confident and exactly what they need is two or three wins. Theyre currently fighting hard and they gave us a game that is hard. They will do it Should they continue then theyll be out of trouble very soon and I dont have any doubt.
Make no mistake, we understood what kind of match we expected and it had been the only we did not want. We were prepared for that.
They defended numbers but using greater quality and quantity of strikes, then sooner or later you will acquire good chances. Thats precisely what happened
