West Bromwich Albion remained top of the Championship table after a late Hal Robson-Kanu winner at Middlesbrough.
Middlesbrough had the choice of their possibilities in an uneventful first half of George Saville visiting his effort.
But Robson-Kanu was on hand to place the league leaders at the front, tapping the ball .
And also the Baggies held on to move two points clear of Leeds.
West Brom had gone into the global break near the top of the Championship to conquer Cardiff 4-2 in The Hawthorns.
However, they were disjointed using Middlesbrough as Sam Johnstone rescued the rebound of Saville rid off the ground opening the scoring at the end of a cagey first half at the Riverside.
Matheus Pereira attempted a spectacular but Darren Randolph was equivalent to it before Johnstone parried a campaign as either side enhanced at the onset of the second half.
The ball crushed over following the cutback of Ashley Fletcher, although boro had a chance to open the scoring 15 minutes out of time.
And it was West Brom that the left all three points thanks to Robson-Kanu, while Boro dropped to 21st.
Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate told BBC Tees:
We created numerous opportunities, which we need to take. Thats what it is all about, making chances and placing the ball at the back of the internet and we did not do this
They dominated possession but we went toe to toe with a group thatll probably go up – they have got some great players but I thought we played really well. If we perform like this and create chances like that, we are going to be fine.
I can not recall a real rescue that Darren Randolph needed to make in the match. I thought we needed to win the game, we ran all of them way and that was a functionality miles greater than the execution against Birmingham.
West Brom boss Slaven Bilic stated:
It is strain up there. It is a pressure. The more you win that increases the pressure and the more closer you will be to the top of the table.
Middlesbrough arent confident and exactly what they want is two or three wins. They are currently battling hard and they gave us a difficult game. If they continue then theyll be out of trouble and I have no doubt that they will do it.
Make no mistake, we understood what type of match we expected and it was the only we did not want. We were prepared for that.
They defended in numbers but with greater quality and amount of strikes, then sooner or later you may acquire good chances. Thats exactly what happened.
