West Bromwich Albion stayed high in the Championship table after a late Hal Robson-Kanu winner in Middlesbrough.
Middlesbrough had the choice of their chances in an uneventful first half with George Saville viewing his effort cleared off the line from Kyle Bartley.
But Robson-Kanu was on hand to place the league leaders at the front, tapping on the ball in at the back post following a goalmouth scramble.
And also the Baggies held on to move two points clear from Leeds.
West Brom went into the worldwide break near the top of the Championship to defeat Cardiff 4-2 at The Hawthorns.
Nevertheless, they were disjointed with Middlesbrough as Sam Johnstone saved Savilles rebound cleared off the ground opening the scoring in the end of a first half in the Riverside.
Matheus Pereira attempted a spectacular overhead-kick out of Grady Dianganas cross but Darren Randolph was equal to it before Johnstone parried a stinging campaign from Jonny Howson as both sides enhanced at the onset of the second half.
Boro had a golden chance over following the cutback of Ashley Fletcher, however the ball crushed.
And it was West Brom who the left with all three points thanks to Robson-Kanu, while Boro dropped to 21st.
Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate told BBC Tees:
We made numerous chances, which we will need to take. Thats what it is all about, creating chances and placing the ball at the back of the internet and we didnt do this
They dominated possession but we went toe to toe with a team that will likely go up – theyve got some amazing players but I thought we played very well. If we make chances like that and play like that, we are going to be fine.
I cant recall an actual save that Darren Randolph needed to make in the game. I thought we needed to win the game, we ran them all the way which was a functionality miles better than the operation against Birmingham.
West Brom boss Slaven Bilic stated:
It is pressure up there. It is a good pressure. The more you win the closer youll be on the tables peak and that adds to the pressure.
Middlesbrough are not confident and what they need is a couple of wins. Theyre battling hard and they gave us a game that is challenging. They will do it Should they continue then they will be from trouble very soon and I dont have any doubt.
Make no mistake, we understood what type of game we expected and it was the only we did not want. Were prepared for that.
They defended numbers but with much increased quality and amount of attacks, then sooner or later you will acquire fantastic opportunities. Thats just what happened
