“So it’s pretty striking for a player to become involved in a teammate’s business in anything but a supportive function,” Silver said on NFL Network’s Inside Minicamp Camp Live. “We saw it with the Steelers and Le’Veon Bell — that was an anomaly. Baker Mayfield is the clear leader of the (locker room) but I’m told by numerous sources that many veterans came to him in the locker room after those remarks about Duke Johnson and let us say voiced their displeasure, saying,’Listen it’s 1 thing to be the leader but that is a man who’s experiencing something, it is company and we need to support him.’ Baker may not have agreed with them, but he heard them so that is something to watch as a very, very talented group gets ready for what could be a significant season.”
After Johnson reiterated he’d prefer to get traded, Mayfield said good riddance last week.
“That’s something that we have been dealing with for a little while,” Mayfield said at the moment, through The Plain Dealer. “If we’ve got guys that want to be here, they will show that, they will voice this. Clearly he’s going to handle his things you are not or you’re either on this particular train, although how he wants, it is moving. You can escape the way or you are able to join us. So it is what it is.”
Mayfield also said Johnson’s scenario was”self-inflicted.”
“I would not say I’m unhappy about it,” Mayfield added. “It’s only the way he has handled it. It can be a stir-up in the networking, it may be however it needs, but if somebody wants to be here, they’ll be here in this situation. You’ve got men inside our locker room who are dying to get playing time, which are going to be here, and I get it…”
Conversely, Jarvis Landry spoke in support of Johnson.
“I expect he knows and believes that men are here for him, whether he’s here or not, the connection goes past the participant, the individual as well, so I certainly hope he knows that and understands that there are guys that are here for him,” the receiver said.
The Browns don’t practice again until training camp in late July, once the locker room will reconvene to hash out any lingering issues, if they remain applicable by then.
Silver additionally noted that head trainer Freddie Kitchens is playing a part in the installment that was offensive .
